support and information when I was applying to university, while also granting me the

volunteering? I hate to say it but it’s the baking! Ha-ha, no - I’m joking. The best thing about volunteering is that I get to make a difference in another
person’s life, especially through adolescence, which can be a confusing time.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div>

people, particularly those from difficult backgrounds or with English as a
second language, to realise their potential. I also felt that the business
angle meant that I would be able to draw on my day-to-day experience at work,
and share a little about the world of work with the participants.</span></div>

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">On one occasion I worked with a team of around 10 young
people to help them prepare a bid to host the fictional Global Games. I
explained a little about the different roles the children would take on, such
as Marketing, Finance or Managing Director, helped with the different bits of
paperwork they had to complete, and coached them in how to handle face-to-face
“business meetings”. </span></div>

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I’ve also played the part of one of the organising
committees, assessing the written work and presentations put forward by the
team, and displaying a few acting skills during “visits” to the host cities and
interviews with the young people.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I always enjoy seeing the enthusiasm, good humour and energy
which the children inject into the task. I find it refreshing and reassuring to see
them throw themselves into a challenge like this. It’s great to be able to help
them identify skills and qualities they perhaps never knew they had.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Volunteering with the Business in FOCUS programme has given me the chance to
understand some of the challenges faced by both young people in our local
communities, and those supporting them in their education. Working with groups
of people I don't usually work with on a daily basis has helped my
relationship-building skills, and compiling and delivering constructive,
positive feedback is another skill it was useful to practice, and which can
applied in the workplace.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I think the students will have benefited from working with
adults other than teachers – it’s a totally different relationship and dynamic.
I also like to think that I’ve been able to give out some encouraging feedback,
and perhaps helped the young people focus their minds on skills they may wish
to develop, or careers they might want to pursue.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I would wholeheartedly recommend volunteering with <b>Into</b>University. The people are really
friendly and helpful, making the days a pleasure to be involved with. You’ll
get the opportunity to work on communicating with and relating to young people,
which may well not be part of your usual day-to-day work. </span></div>

at school and I enjoy learning things, so I wanted to help others enjoy their
education and to get something out of their studies. I like that </span><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><b>Into</b></span><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">University helps to show students that are perhaps
less confident in their abilities that they can go to university or do whatever
they want in the future. I think it’s a very encouraging and positive
organisation.</span></div>

students with their homework: this sometimes involves encouraging them as they
work through it themselves, checking their work, or helping them understand the
task and the topic they are studying. Also, as a languages student I can help them learn vocab with games or
fun activities.</span></span></div>

was previously struggling really engage with their work, when you’ve explained
something to them in a way that suddenly makes it a lot clearer for them and
they see that they can actually do the work that seemed impossible before.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div>

made a difference in my life - I look forward to it every week and I think it

really liked that <b>Into</b>University was
a separate institution from the University, to give me a chance to get out of
the Oxford ‘bubble’. As a nation-wide charity, I also felt that my volunteering
would be structured and reliable as I have previously done ‘casual’
volunteering which is undoubtedly as worthwhile but not as well-organised.</span></span></div>

<span style="font-family: "arial" , sans-serif;"><span style="color: #444444;">Despite the fact that<b> Into</b>University is a national charity, during the training session I found the IU
staff to be so lovely and welcoming. They were really attuned to what I wanted
to get out of the programme and eager to match me with someone I was similar to
– they were very very successful in this!</span></span></div>

<span style="font-family: "arial" , sans-serif;"><span style="color: #444444;">The mentoring programme was also
really appealing, as I felt it would give me a chance to really get to know one
person and help on more than just an academic front. The ‘social’ and ‘future’
aspects of mentoring are crucial to helping my mentee become a more rounded and
secure person, and have indeed been some of our most invaluable and enjoyable
sessions.</span></span></div>

<span style="font-family: "arial" , sans-serif;"><span style="color: #444444;"><br /></span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: "arial" , sans-serif;">My
mentee is 17 and in her first year of Sixth Form, but when we began our sessions
she was in her final year of GCSEs. Every session is either an ‘academic’,
‘future’ or ‘social’ meeting. In ‘academic’ meetings I help her with her
schoolwork or with revision. In 'future' sessions, we have focused on her
‘next step’ and how to get there – last year that next step was Sixth Form and
this year it has been university. </span><span style="font-family: "arial" , sans-serif;">For example, at the moment we are practising
the UKCAT tests and looking at ways for her to get medical work experience. </span></span></div>

<span style="font-family: "arial" , sans-serif;"><span style="color: #444444;"><br /></span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , sans-serif;"><span style="color: #444444;">Social
sessions are often our favourite as a chance to chat and escape from our work.
In the past, we have played games, baked or done personality tests. If we
haven’t seen each other in a while, we will just chat about our lives. The mentoring sessions are all working towards a corresponding ‘academic’, ‘social’ and
‘future’ SMART target, which helps to ensure that we are working towards a
longer term aim and that we have some structure. I have found every session to
be rewarding, and I usually leave happier than I arrived! </span></span></div>

<span style="font-family: "arial" , sans-serif;"><span style="color: #444444;"><br /></span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , sans-serif;"><span style="color: #444444;">At times, I have been
able to help my mentee with issues she is facing, along with the <b>Into</b>University staff. Recently, we had
an off-site meeting which we both very much enjoyed. </span></span></div>

<span style="font-family: "arial" , sans-serif;"><span style="color: #444444;"><br /></span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , sans-serif;"><span style="color: #444444;">Mentoring has possibly been one of the most enriching aspects of my time at university and I genuinely look forward to it every week. I will be very sad to leave at the end of this year! </span></span></div>

<span style="font-family: "arial" , sans-serif;"><span style="color: #444444;">From a more professional standpoint, volunteering has helped me develop transferable skills such as communication, leadership, teamwork, organisation and time management. However, these are not the biggest differences it has made to my life: <b>Into</b>University has given me a chance to get to know new people, to (hopefully) make a difference to someone’s life and has also provided a welcome escape from my university work. </span></span></div>

of the first ever <b>IntoUn</b></span><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><b>iversity
Volunteers’ Week</b>. </span><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">There are already a number of national and international weeks celebrating the contribution that volunteers make to society and we've always looked forward to recognising our own volunteers
during these weeks. </span></div>

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">But since our volunteers are an integral part of our
organisation and we simply couldn’t provide the support we do without them, we've created our very own campaign to showcase our wonderful volunteers</span><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"> and to extend a huge thank you to everyone who
has supported </span><b style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Into</b><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">University and its

most committed and ambitious students. He first visited our Hackney South
centre in 2011, when he was in Year 8, to find a quiet space to
complete his homework. Living with his family on a nearby council
estate, Adetayo often found it difficult to focus on his work at home
and his parents, whilst supportive and encouraging, did not feel confident to
support him with his studies.</span></div>

found a home-from-home at our Hackney South centre and over the past five years
Adetayo has developed </span><span class="s13">close relationships with the
staff team. As well as providing help for Adetayo with his school work, the
team’s pastoral care has also had a significant impact - especially in helping
Adetayo to thinking about his university options. </span><o:p></o:p></span></div>

us about your educational background? <o:p></o:p></span></span></b></div>

primary school at St Matthias on the Warwick Road in London, just after the
war, but was soon sent off to boarding school in Sussex – the Abbey, Ashurst
Wood. I was there for six years, hated being away from home, loved rugby and
singing. Then I went off to a school in Canterbury, the King’s School, where I
got more used to being away from home and still loved rugby and singing. We
wore strange uniforms, wing collars, black jackets, boaters. And when I was
older I got to wear a scarlet gown, which made me feel very important.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

university mean for you? Did gaining a degree from King’s College London open
doors? <o:p></o:p></span></span></b></div>

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I didn’t go straight to university but chose the army
instead, and went to Sandhurst, where officers are trained. I liked the
uniform, the good food and the friends I made, but hated being shouted at, and
decided army life was not for me. I met and married my wife, Clare, when we
were really young, because we loved one another, and had children really young,
three of them. Then I went off to university at King’s College London, to start
all over again. It was at King’s that I came into contact with some of the
classic stories such as <i>Beowulf</i> and <i>Sir Gawain and the Green Knight</i>. I loved
them and have never forgotten listening to one professor who used to sit on the
edge of the desk and read to us with incredible passion. It made me fall in
love with stories again that I hadn’t connected with since listening to my
mother read when I was a child. I got my degree in French and English – just –
and decided to become a teacher. <span style="line-height: 115%;"> </span></span></div>

reading stories to the children, and they seemed to like it too. We were
teaching at a little village primary school in Kent, at Wickhambreaux, when I
ran out of other writers’ stories to read, so started making up some of my own.<span style="line-height: 115%; mso-bidi-font-size: 12.0pt;"><o:p></o:p></span></span></div>

Where did you get the inspiration for it? </span></b><span style="color: #c00000; line-height: 115%;"> </span></span></div>

<span style="line-height: 115%; mso-bidi-font-size: 12.0pt;"><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Clare and I have lived in Iddesleigh, in Devon, since 1975.
It’s home, and I love it, and it’s where I belong. It’s where I know. My
children have grown up here, my grandchildren come here. It’s the place I like
to be when I’m not travelling around doing book things. And because I know it
so well, I write about it a lot. That’s why I wrote <i>War Horse</i>, which is based pretty much here, on a Devon farm. I
wrote that particular story from meeting an old soldier, Wilfred Ellis, thirty
five years ago in the Duke of York pub down the road, when he told me about
going to the First World War as a young man.</span></span></div>

an idea of the rhythm of life. How we all have our place or time on this earth.
There’s the church, and you maybe get christened there, and you may get married
there, and you may end up in the graveyard there. I know the people who planted
the trees and ploughed the land, where they live and where they work. And you
don’t know that until you stay in the place long enough. It’s England as it has
been for 1,000 years. It’s quite a literary part of Devon. Ted Hughes, who was
a great inspiration to me and an early encourager of my work, was a neighbour
until his death in 1998, and the Torridge, at the end of my lane, which is one
of the country’s great salmon rivers, is the setting for Henry Williamson’s <i>Tarka the Otter</i>.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

Man Who Planted Trees</i> by Jean Giono. I have been much helped in my own
writing by many friends and writers, but especially Ted Hughes. He became a
good friend, and was a great inspiration to me to keep writing when I was
finding it hard.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

of your career are you most proud? What has been your greatest achievement to

Children. When Clare and I were both teachers, and trying to decide what was
lacking in the lives of the city-based primary school children we taught, we
realised that one important factor was a deep experience of the English
countryside especially ‘the working countryside.’ <o:p></o:p></span></div>

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">The children learn hands-on where their food comes from, so,
by the end of a whole week, they go back knowing what an extraordinary place
the countryside is, knowing about planting, harvesting, milking, mucking out,
feeding the animals, herding sheep. First of all some find it strange – because
it smells different, it looks different, and it can be a bit frightening when
the wind blows and the owls hoot at night. They see a wild rabbit. Not one
that’s in a pen in a pet shop, but a wild rabbit in the field, or a hare, and
fish jumping in the river. Those things which are part of the wild world, which
are so important and which they don’t forget. It can be their first
introduction to so much that’s new, and that’s what’s amazing about it.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

and your wife Clare celebrated 40 years of Farms for City Children. Why is
involvement in philanthropic activities, in particular those related to
education and young people, so important to you?<o:p></o:p></span></span></b></div>

<span lang="EN-US" style="line-height: 115%;"><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">40 years on
there is even more need for children to experience nature as the vast majority
of people in this country now are urban. They’re surrounded by high rise
buildings, and tarmac, and noise, so this is a completely new world for them. <o:p></o:p></span></span></div>

country. 99% have never seen darkness before, as it is at dawn. A lot of them
don’t know where berries come from, or where their milk comes from. They don’t
know what work it takes to produce it – so they actually join in and help.
These are not lessons you can pick up by looking at the telly, or by drawings
on boards or making little notes on the clipboards. They’re doing it themselves
and that’s what’s really wonderful about the experience.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

working recently on a short WWF Climate Coalition Film, <i>I wish for You</i>, with actors Jeremy Irons and Maxine Peake.<sup>1<o:p></o:p></sup></span></div>

on a letter I wrote from a grandfather to his granddaughter and sums up my
answer to this question: ‘If I have learnt anything in my long life, it’s this.
Our earth is a living breathing being, and we must hurt her no more. We are
using her up, fouling the air and the sea, making a dustbin of the land, a
sewer of the oceans, a graveyard of her creatures. We have to learn to love our
earth again, love her as much as I love you and you love me. For you and I, we
are a part of this living planet, part of our earth’s great family.’<o:p></o:p></span></div>

representatives of people from my background (i.e. those less likely to go to
university) to put questions to MPs on the Bill Committee for Higher
Education reform.</span></div>

event in London this evening, following on from our London conference, to share
this year’s highlights and successes with a range of our valued supporters.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

volunteer alumni the chance to receive digital updates on the charity’s
progress alongside invitations to events, so that the end of a volunteering
programme doesn’t mean the end of a volunteer’s relationship with us.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

Leeds East through their mother, Naoise, who first encountered <b>Into</b>University through a poster
advertising the opening of the centre. When Naoise attended the open day with
her mother and youngest daughters, she was taken aback by this ‘amazing
opportunity’ and strongly encouraged Aysha and Afreya to attend.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div>

studying for her A-Levels in Philosophy, Ethics, Sociology and English
Language. Younger sister Afreya is in Year 9 at Abbey Grange Academy and is
currently focused on her upcoming exams. Afreya mentions that her favourite
subjects at school are PE and Music, and she also reveals that she plays the
steel pans and loves to sing.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

at <b>Into</b>University Leeds East, Naoise
requested for Aysha to receive some one-to-one support with her Sixth Form
application. This was a huge turning point for Aysha who started to communicate
more with the centre staff. Since then, she has taken full advantage of all the
opportunities available to her at <b>Into</b>University.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

Afreya agree that they thoroughly enjoy seeing their mentors and appreciate
‘the full attention’ they receive not only from their mentors, but also from
the centre staff. Aysha speaks fondly of mentor Katie, a Law student at the
University of Leeds, and states that while she was in Year 11, ‘[Katie] helped
me put together a revision timetable, she spoke to me about my future, career
options and we looked through university brochures.’ Afreya feels she has
gained a new friend in her mentor, Caren, an Accounting and Finance student at
the University of Leeds. Alongside her meetings with Caren to discuss academic
life, Afreya is especially grateful for the social aspects of the meetings, and
particularly enjoyed making a chocolate cake in her recent meeting with Caren.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

new people, Aysha has significantly broadened her horizons. Her confidence has
continued to develop and, in the 2015 summer holidays, Aysha was fortunate to
have the opportunity to travel to Canada for three weeks to take part in an
Outward Bound expedition. Aysha proudly reflects on the experience: ‘It was the
hardest adventure of my life. But I did it.’ Afreya is eager to follow in her
older sister’s footsteps.</span><o:p></o:p></span></div>

they are both very determined and driven. Afreya knows that she wants to go on
to university but, understandably, is at present focused on her GCSEs. Aysha
would like to go to the University of Liverpool and is looking forward to
beginning the application process, with the guidance and support of <b>Into</b>University.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

Academic Support] that was it. They are really very focused.’ She is clearly
very proud of Aysha and Afreya’s progress and is excited for her younger
children to experience the same opportunities. Another of Naoise’s daughters,
Amira, recently started at St Peter’s C of E Primary School and – now old
enough – began her journey with <b>Into</b>University
Leeds East in September 2015. Naoise recalls how committed Amira is to Academic
Support: ‘Amira loves it. She will not miss a session. It was my birthday last
week and I said “Amira, we’re having a day off.” She said to me “no – don’t
phone!” She loves it!’ <o:p></o:p></span></div>

by enrolling on to an access course at the University of Leeds to study
English. Naoise explained that she became unsure of her abilities during the
application process but she was encouraged to keep going by thinking of her
daughters: ‘At each point, I have thought about them. I thought about how hard
Aysha works because she’s so determined. I kept thinking, well she’s working
really hard – if she can do it then I should be able to. She just doesn’t give
up, she just keeps going.’ <o:p></o:p></span></div>

centre. When asked whether she would recommend </span><b style="color: #444444; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; line-height: 115%;">Into</b><span style="color: #444444; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; line-height: 115%;">University to another parent, without hesitation she said: ‘Oh
100%, yeah! I tell everyone.’</span><br />

the University of Cambridge. He is a Director of Lisburne Holdings Ltd and is
also a Director of Value Retail plc, which develops and operates factory outlet
centres including Bicester Village in Oxfordshire.</span></span></i></div>

programme began as a local project at the North Kensington centre. By 2006, the
co-founders, Rachel Carr and Hugh Rayment-Pickard, knew from the burgeoning
numbers and feedback from users that they had an extraordinary project on their
hands. The question naturally arose: was this a one-off or could they replicate
this success across several centres? They convened a symposium and invited
politicians, educationalists and local community members to debate this
question. I was – and am – part of the Bicester Village group that has expanded
to multiple locations across Europe, so I had a sense of what it is to be part
of a growing company and was in favour of expansion.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div>

<span style="font-family: "calibri" , sans-serif; font-size: 11.0pt;"><span style="color: #666666;">I went home and had a sleepless night thinking:
‘this is a terrific idea. The educational gap is neither fair nor good for
society. My kids are helped to aspire to
go to university and receive all the backing they need whereas, literally a few
hundred yards away, in the local authority flats over the road, there will be a
child of equal intelligence who doesn’t have this aspiration or opportunity and
consequently has a very different life outcome. Any idea that can successfully
address this horrible inequality is a fantastic thing. But what if, like many good ideas, it remains
just that? There was no mention of funding for this mooted expansion – what
will happen if it just doesn’t get traction?’<o:p></o:p></span></span></div>

<span style="font-family: "calibri" , sans-serif; font-size: 11.0pt;"><span style="color: #666666;">The next morning I got up and wrote a cheque. I
then called two friends and asked whether they would consider doing the same
and those two dear people said yes. So off I went to Sirdar Road and presented
Rachel and Hugh with £30,000.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div>

<span style="font-family: "calibri" , sans-serif; font-size: 11.0pt;"><span style="color: #666666;">It seemed like a fateful moment. Rachel looked at
Hugh, Hugh looked at Rachel. There was a long pause. Then Rachel said,
laughing, ‘oh dear, now we really have to do it!’<o:p></o:p></span></span></div>

<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: "calibri" , sans-serif; font-size: 11.0pt;"><span style="color: #666666;">And from that little acorn, seeing a handful of
students, we have in less than ten years grown into this wonderful organisation
with 21 centres. This year we will serve more than 21,500 young people.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div>

<span style="font-family: "calibri" , sans-serif; font-size: 11.0pt;"><span style="color: #666666;">What has driven and sustained this growth? Firstly
and simply it remains a compelling idea. When you tell people that for
society’s most disadvantaged cohort only 23% progress to Higher Education they
are initially shocked, but when you add that when they have been through our
programme that percentage rises to 80% they are then hugely supportive.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div>

<span style="font-family: "calibri" , sans-serif; font-size: 11.0pt;"><span style="color: #666666;"><br /></span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: "calibri" , sans-serif; font-size: 11.0pt;"><span style="color: #666666;">The power of the idea has enabled us to raise
funding right across the spectrum, from single individuals to huge
institutions, such as The Queen’s Trust and Impetus-PEF.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div>

<span style="font-family: "calibri" , sans-serif; font-size: 11.0pt;"><span style="color: #666666;">Moreover, we have been able to recruit an
incredible team of intelligent and enthusiastic colleagues. Word seems to have
got out that we are doing something worthwhile and we interview, on average, 18
graduate scheme applicants for each position. The full-time staff are supported
by a corps of over 1,500 wonderful volunteers who give selflessly of their
time.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div>

<span style="font-family: "calibri" , sans-serif; font-size: 11.0pt;"><span style="color: #666666;">Secondly, the need for what we do remains enormous.
While we are now present in seven cities across England, our research shows
many more areas with dire university progression rates that would be
transformed by one of our centres. Over the next five years, we hope to extend
our reach to more young people by opening additional centres and by expanding
our programmes to best suit the needs of our students.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div>

to plan the pace of expansion. It is wonderful to be part of a growth story. An
organisation that is not growing feels as if it is shrinking. Expansion is
inspiring and as well as fundamentally helping more young people, it is
attractive to funders who want to see an idea that is succeeding on a
meaningful scale. It also creates a great atmosphere among our staff who see
that if they succeed there is plenty of space for them to grow into very
responsible roles at a young age. However, we Trustees are also very mindful
that our expansion must be sustainable. Growth requires financial and
management resources and so we try to find the right balance, carefully
calibrating the number of centres we open each year so we are going as fast as
we can without becoming overstretched.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div>

All across the UK
universities, colleges and charitable organisations are recognising and
celebrating the amazing achievements of young volunteers. </span></b></div>

<span style="color: #444444; font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">According to <a href="http://www.iwill.org.uk/resources/research">research by Ipsos MORI</a>, an incredible 42% of 10-20 year-olds took part in meaningful social
action in 2015 and 70% of young people surveyed said they are likely to
participate in social action in the future. We also found that 15% of the UK’s
undergraduate students devote some of their free time to supporting a charity
or helping those in need,<a href="file:///C:/Users/staff/AppData/Local/Microsoft/Windows/INetCache/Content.Outlook/1SPBBTM0/SVW%202016%20-%20Posts%20summary%20(1)%20(003).docx#_ftn1" name="_ftnref1" title=""><span class="MsoFootnoteReference"><!--[if !supportFootnotes]--><span class="MsoFootnoteReference"><span style="font-size: 11pt; line-height: 115%;">[1]</span></span><!--[endif]--></span></a>
and this week we will highlight the passion, commitment, skills and insight our
university student volunteers bring to the work we do at <b>Into</b>University. I would therefore like to begin the week by saying
a huge thank you to all of our university volunteers across

base, supporting us to achieve our goals and reach as many children and young
people as possible. Without their enthusiasm and commitment, we could not
provide the same quality of experience to our own students. </span></div>

Ambassadors to Academic Support Tutors, our one-to-one mentors, to Buddy Day
leaders - all of our student volunteers help to raise the aspirations and academic attainment of our young people.</span></div>

<span style="color: #444444; font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">By showing our students
around their campuses, answering their questions and enabling them to
experience university life first-hand, our volunteers provide invaluable
insight and act as exceptional role models, helping our young people to aspire to great futures. </span></div>

<span style="color: #444444; font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Whilst building on the skills and confidence of our
students, our volunteers are also developing skills that are valuable for both
their professional and personal growth. A <a href="http://www.behaviouralinsights.co.uk/publications/evaluating-youth-social-action-final-report/">recent report by the Behavioural
Insights Team and the Cabinet Office</a> found <i>“compelling and robust
evidence that young people who take part in social action initiatives, such as
volunteering, develop some of the most critical skills for employment and
adulthood in the process". </i>Volunteering also connects students with like-minded
people and helps them to engage with life beyond lectures.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

amazing. Aerospace engineering student Umar at Imperial

campaign aims to promote charitable giving, either through time or financial
donations, during a period where society tends to focus more on material items.</span></span></b></div>

can remember is finishing the school term (I was a teacher previously) and
looking forward to the summer holidays. Even if I only had two weeks to pack my bags, leave home and move to

have been trained thoroughly for eight weeks - from seminars with heated discussions
to hands-on experience; it has been incredible.
And then I started my role as the Supplementary Schools Project Worker
alongside my manager Shamiso Lewis, something I was very much looking forward

University of London with Community Education Forum School and had a memorable

myself, I hung the pristine sheets in the garden. A garden of lush greenery
brought to life by the music of nature. I’ve always tried to join the choir of
buzzing bees and chirping birds but it seems like humans aren’t just ready yet.
My dear mother was a different case. Up and down, her voice rode like a wave
through the air, silencing nature’s melody. Her voice rang clear and true
across the village of stone rectangles and mosaics for streets. Her voice, an
enchanting beauty as she was. <o:p></o:p></span></span></div>

thought and calmly ventured to the market. The weather was perfect for idle

was an intersection of cultures and greatness. An array of food was presented
to the customers, beckoning them with their mouth-watering scents. Fabrics
shone in the sunlight, injecting everyone with wonder and positivity. Towering
above this was a giant mountain rumbling with joy as the chief said. I struggle
to agree and dread cloaks me when I lay my eyes on it. Instead I looked around
and I saw the efforts of the people around me triggering my aspiration. It was
always my dream to please others and what better way to do this than to offer
them a cold drink? I set off on my job and approached many clients. Some were
jubilant children others worrisome mothers and even some street vendors
showering me with gifts for my kindness. It was a really happy day.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div>

until the mountain belched a grand rumble and caused the ground to tremor. The
crowds cheered and celebrated completely unaware of what I feared. Again it
shook spewing out black clouds. The crowds quietened but some were still
cheering. Yet again it rumbled, jarring our sanity as we saw flames leap in to
the sky. This time no one cheered. We stood stone still as the black snow began
to fall. Softly it perched on the buildings, the tents, the street smothering
everything in darkness. This snow wasn’t cool and burned to the touch. Now was
the time help was in dire need so I tried. My efforts were wasted as one by one
the villagers choked on the darkness gasping in pain. I was already face down
on the streets searching for my last breaths. My last thoughts came
spontaneously. Those sheets were white no more. Stained black by the silent
killers.</span><o:p></o:p></span><br />
