Catie, undergraduate at Queen Mary University and IU undergraduate mentor, writes her experience of mentoring with IU:
Onika and I
have spent three years as a mentoring pair at IU's centre in Bow and hugely enjoyed it! During that
time, we have become friends, learned a lot about each other completed school
work but also taken part in a lot of fun activities.
I can still
remember one of the first activities we did together which revolved around
science as it interested us both. We made our own slime using corn flour and
water – sounds disgusting (and it was!) but also weird and interesting.
Together we
have gone over really important school coursework and come up with revision
plans for exams. Tasks like these helped us both in our own studies and were a
key component of mentoring.
Onika has
recently had to think about her A-level options and has the goal of studying
architecture at university. Together we have researched sixth form colleges,
different subjects and the different courses available at university. I have
also offered my own experience about university and I am confident that
whatever course or job Onika decides to do; she will succeed and do
brilliantly!
At the end of
the mentoring year, the mentoring graduation is a great celebration. Onika and
I made friendship bracelets, played some games and got to speak to other
mentoring pairs which was fantastic and a great way to round off a year as a
mentoring partnership.
The last
three years have flown by really quickly and it will be sad to finish our
mentoring relationship. Onika and I have learnt from each other, helped each
other and had plenty of laughs and fun along the way. We would recommend to
everyone to become a mentor or a mentee and to enjoy the partnership that comes
with it.
Thanks IntoUniversity!
