A Ray of Hope amongst the Gloomy Clouds

Gemma Fagbadegun

We’ve been pretty anxious this week at IntoUniversity. It was hard not to worry, when every day the headlines in the Education sections of each paper were predicting a disaster for a large portion of school-leavers when the A-Level results came out on August 19th.

The teams at our centres in Bow, Lambeth, Brent, North Kensington, Haringey and Hackney made some nerve-wracking phone calls to their Year 13 students yesterday afternoon and this morning. They have been guiding these students through the highs and lows of applying to university, and, like everyone involved with the charity, they are dedicated to helping close the achievement gap between students from poorer backgrounds and those who are more privileged.
Whilst I awaited the news, I read an article by The Telegraph’s Jeff Randall, who offered consolation to those who hadn’t made the cut. I agreed with some of his points; for those who haven’t made it, all is not lost and there are other options. But I was also delighted to hear the results roll in from across the IU network, with students gaining places to Brunel, Southampton, Kingston and Surrey Universities to name a few, studying topics as varied as History, Pharmacology, Maths, Economics and Biological Sciences. Congratulations to them all.

Unfortunately, we can’t kid ourselves that all of our students will have a fairy tale ending in times like these. But IntoUniversity will be there to support those unlucky ones who didn’t quite achieve their dreams this time around, and to ensure that they go on aspiring to something more.
