Guest Blog Post - Volunteering with IntoUniversity

This post is courtesy of Cherry, an Academic Support volunteer at IU Lambeth who wrote about her experience of IntoUniversity on her personal blog.

'Last week, I went to my second End of Term party with a group of primary school students at my local IntoUniversity centre in London. IntoUniversity is a charity partner with my work place and I am an Academic Support tutor at their Lambeth centre. Every 1 to 2 weeks I spend around 2 hours with students aged from 6 to 11, helping them with their homework and joining them in different learning activities.
Students agreed that by coming to these sessions, their homework has improved, they had a lot of fun, have made new friends and have gained confidence in communicating with others! It is so nice to watch these kids blossom. Usually by the end of a term, newly joined children are more open and keen to communicate and learn.
At the centres, students get academic support and also the opportunity to learn about topics outside the school curriculum. We have completed a school term of Business Ethics and this term we were learning about paleontology, the study of prehistoric life - dinosaurs!
IntoUniversity centres work very hard to make these topics fun and informative, introducing the students to the vast choices of studies available in further education. Throughout the term, students are recognised and rewarded for regular attendance, good behaviour, class participation and concentration. At the end of each term, students are presented with certificates which they are all very proud of!
I find this a very rewarding experience, although I have to work later to make up the time, but it is so worth it.'

Applications for our Nottingham and Bristol centres will open later in the year, but other volunteering opportunities can be found here.
