IntoUniversity Volunteer Stories - Esther, Hammersmith

Esther is an Academic Support volunteer at our Hammersmith centre. This #GivingTuesday, we asked Esther to tell us about her experience of volunteering with IntoUniversity.

Why did you choose to volunteer with IntoUniversity?
I share IntoUniversity’s belief that all people, regardless of their background and economic circumstances, deserve the chance to fulfil their potential.

I witnessed the value of IntoUniversity’s work first-hand while working as an Access Ambassador at university. At their graduation ceremony, after a day of interactive talks about university life and touring the University of Cambridge, most of the visiting primary school children said they intended to go to university in the future.

I wanted more experience of working with primary school children in a supportive environment close to my home. IntoUniversity ticked all of those boxes and gave me flexibility in deciding my time commitment to volunteering.

What has been the highlight of your time at IntoUniversity?

My favourite moment so far has been working with a group of excited 8-10-year olds pretending to be zoologists. Armed with instructions that utilised their knowledge of compass directions and degrees in a circle they travelled the world to discover foreign animals, from giraffes in Africa to penguins in the Antarctic.

It was a great session – even the shiest students were involved, their expressions shifting from deep concentration to beaming smiles.

What would you say to someone who was considering volunteering with IntoUniversity?

Get ready for a really fun and rewarding experience. You will meet delightful young people and work alongside extremely friendly staff. Support is offered every step of the way and it is easy to fit volunteering around your other commitments.

Whichever way you choose to volunteer you can be sure that you are making a huge difference to young peoples’ academic progress and that ultimately you are giving them the tools and confidence to realise their dreams.
